The idea of “brand positioning” was first introduced by Al Ries, one of the earliest thinkers to truly explore how brands take shape in the minds of customers. In his book “Positioning”, he defined three foundational eras of marketing thought: Product. Image. Positioning.
That book was written decades ago. Since then, the world of branding has evolved. And based on my own observations over the past years, I believe two new eras have emerged:
👉 The Why Era
👉 The Experimental Era
Both are fascinating and risky.
Because while short-term tactics are everywhere, the strategic foundation of positioning is increasingly overlooked. In this carousel, I’ve mapped out the evolution of positioning, as a reminder that brands don’t live through tactics alone.
